Notes from the mozart and well beyond CD booklet:

Welsh: Serenade, Barcarolle

Contained within Welsh's Serenade is another historical form - the barcarolle. Like those originally sung by 18th century Venetian gondoliers, this one [6] 18:35-99:99 is in 6/8 time, evoking the lilt of a gondola gliding through gentle waters. Here, the bassoon initially plays fragments from the string accompaniment pattern before finally developing them into an extended melody. The harmony occasionally shifts beneath the melody [6] 20:04 suggesting the tide beneath a boat.
